How ToARTS — MUSIC THEORY
Arts are often sadly neglected today in education. We offer extensive programs in Music Theory and Composition; Animation; and Acting, all designed for home school use. These highly creative, detailed courses provide an education in depth, with an eye toward the creation of professionals. They should generally be done in sequence by the student interested in that art form.
MUSIC THEORY COURSES OVERVIEW
We offer a four course (two-three year) series on Music
Theory, Music History, and Composition, taking students who
start out knowing nothing about music (or very little)
through all the steps and exercises needed to read music,
play on a keyboard (such as a piano), understand the history
of music, and finally, how to compose their own pieces.

The end result of our Music Theory program is a student who plays some keyboard or piano, reads music, understands the history of music, understands the essentials of music theory and is able to compose interesting and original compositions.
Please note - Many of the required films or music have links provided so that there may be no need to secure them. However, we cannot guarantee that all the links will be “live” or active when you use them. You may need to secure films or music in other ways. No film or music selected is very hard to secure. Any book required will need to be secured by you, though a great deal of reading material built in to the courses (such as The Story of Mankind) is built directly into the courses and so do not need to be secured.

Music Theory I - 'The Basics'For students, ages 9-adult. What is music? What is it made of? How do you 'read' music, and play a piano or keyboard. One of our most successful courses, written by an experienced instructor in music theory, and the composer of over 1,200 songs!
Music Theory II - 'More Basics'Ages 9-adult. Picks up where Music I left off. Dive into music! Scales, more chords, modes! The essentials of music are taught in detail, as the student significantly improves their piano/keyboard technique. This course is constructed to prepare the student to play well enough and understand music sufficiently to start them composing.
Music Theory III - Music History 'Bach to Rock'For ages 11-adult. The history of music, from the moment man found he could control the nature of sound, through the invention of instruments and choirs, through Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, The Beatles, and everyone in-between.
Music Theory IV - CompositionA course for the musically advanced student age 11-adult who understands music theory and history, and is ready to work seriously as a composer. Through a lengthy series of detailed exercises, the student develops the skills needed to compose effective and interesting music.
